TORONTO (AP) -The Blue Jays are considering scrapping a promotion that offers fans upper deck tickets for $2 after several brawls broke out in the stands during a game Tuesday night.
Team president Paul Godfrey said Wednesday that no alcohol will be sold in the upper deck for the three remaining $2 games this season, May 6 against Tampa Bay, May 20 against the Angels, and June 10 against Seattle.
The Blue Jays will also increase security in the stands and pat down some fans in a bid to prevent the smuggling of hard liquor and beer into the stadium.
Nearly 100 fans were ejected from Rogers Centre in both the April 4 home opener against Boston and Tuesday's game against Oakland, mostly for ``alcohol-related'' incidents, Godfrey said.
A man and a woman, both shirtless, ran onto the field in the ninth inning of the home opener.
``It's really unfortunate some fans feel like it's a night club here,'' Godfrey said. ``The few can always ruin it for the majority.''
Godfrey said he would consider scrapping the $2 promotion in future seasons if the disturbances continue.
``We're not going to tolerate that kind of behavior,'' Godfrey said. ``You don't associate that with Toronto and you don't associate that with this ball park. It's not going to continue.
``If it continues to cause our fans who are interested in baseball a disturbance or a certain enjoyment of the game, then I'll seriously consider scrapping the $2 program entirely,'' he said. ``It's unfortunate because it's a good way to attract people, but we're not going to tolerate that.''
