NEW YORK (AP) – Dynamic rookie outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has made Boston’s opening-day roster and will start in Monday’s opener against the New York Yankees.
Manager John Farrell told Bradley, who turns 23 on April 19, the news on the flight to New York on Saturday night.
Taken with the 40th overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft, Bradley batted .419 in spring training with a .507 on-base percentage.
Jonny Gomes will move from field field to designated hitter while David Ortiz is sidelined with a right Achilles tendon injury.
To make room for Bradley on the 40-man roster, infielder Mauro Gomez was designated for assignment Sunday.
Boston placed pitchers Craig Breslow (left shoulder tendinitis) and Franklin Morales (lower back strain) on the 15-day DL, both retroactive to March 22.
