PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -Rather than have Johan Santana ride a bus 2 hours to pitch against division rival Atlanta, the Mets had their ace pitch against New York minor leaguers for four innings in his second outing since knee surgery.
Santana allowed two runs and six hits in four innings Tuesday, striking out five and walking none. He gave up three doubles and threw 40 of 56 pitches for strikes.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner had hoped to pitch for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. After being slowed by elbow tightness, he made his first spring training outing last Thursday against Florida, giving up three runs and four hits in 2 2-3 innings.
