GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -Kansas City Royals right-hander Julio Pimentel will be out at least six weeks with an elbow injury and possibly the season, if surgery is required.
The Royals say Pimentel has a non-displaced bone spur fracture in his pitching elbow. The bone spur is close to the ulnar collateral ligament.
Manager Trey Hillman says the 23-year-old is waiting for a second opinion on whether he needs surgery.
The Royals announced the news on Monday.
Pimentel is one of Kansas City’s top pitching prospects. He suffered the injury while throwing a pitch Friday against Hank Blalock of the Texas Rangers.
Pimentel was acquired in a 2006 trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
