TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -Ian Stewart and Franklin Morales took big strides toward making the Colorado Rockies out of spring training.
Stewart, a third baseman, hit a three-run homer off John Lackey, and Franklin pitched four solid innings in the Rockies’ 6-4 victory over the Anaheim Angels on Thursday.
“It’s good that he got to get out there and play nine innings,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Stewart, who went 2-for-5 to raise his spring average to .308. “He looked very good.”
If Stewart can hit, the Rockies figure to find at-bats for him this season, even though he plays the same position as Garrett Atkins, who hit 21 homers with 99 RBI last season.
Stewart hit 10 homers in 266 at-bats last season for the Rockies.
