PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -Freddy Garcia tossed two scoreless innings and the New York Mets beat the University of Michigan 18-7 on Sunday.
Garcia, trying to win the fifth spot in New York’s rotation, allowed three hits and struck out one. He worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first.
Tim Redding, one of Garcia’s competitors for the fifth spot, was hit hard. He recorded just one out and was charged with five runs and five hits.
Rob Mackowiak hit a three-run homer and finished with six RBIs for New York.
Mike Dufek homered twice and Nick Urban also went deep for the Wolverines.
