GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -American League Cy Young award winner Cliff Lee is in for quite ride.
The Cleveland Indians left-hander will be riding in an F-16 aircraft assigned to the 309th Fighter Squadron on Thursday – The Wild Ducks – at Luke Air Force Base, located close to the team’s training complex in Goodyear, Ariz.
Lee will be filming a public service announcement for the base’s upcoming open house and air show. Major Dan “Dutch” Munter, who is an F-16 instructor pilot, will then take the left-hander to the air.
Indians manager Eric Wedge isn’t worried about seeing his best pitcher, who went 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA last season, go up into the wild blue yonder.
“I’m sure he’s going to be throwing up all over the place,” Wedge said with a laugh. “Other than that, we’ll see what happens.”
Wedge thinks Lee will be in good hands with an experienced crew at the controls.
“I don’t know those guys, but I trust them,” Wedge said.
Munter and his crew will take Lee around the local area before returning to the base.
