MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Relief pitcher Matt Guerrier and the Minnesota Twins agreed Thursday to a $950,000, one-year contract that avoided a salary arbitration hearing.
The right-hander became a reliable long reliever for the Twins last season, going 2-4 with a 2.35 ERA and one save in 73 appearances. He has gradually improved since breaking in with the club in 2004.
Right-handers hit just .187 against Guerrier last season, when he made $407,500. He often served as the bridge between Minnesota's up-and-down starters and dominant late-inning relief.
Guerrier was brilliant in May, June and July, allowing only eight earned runs in 45 1-3 innings over 37 appearances.
The agreement means right fielder Michael Cuddyer is the lone remaining Twins player in arbitration. Hearings are held throughout February, but teams typically reach agreements with players before that point.
Cuddyer asked for $6.2 million next season, and the Twins offered $4.7 million. Guerrier asked for $1.15 million, and the Twins offered $750,000.
