TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -James Shields and the Tampa Bay Rays were closing in on a long-term contract Tuesday night.
The 26-year-old right-hander went 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA in his first full season in the major leagues last year. He is 18-16 with a 4.21 ERA in 52 career starts and is one of the young players the team is counting on to be part of a promising future.
The Rays scheduled what was characterized as a ``major announcement regarding a player signing'' for Wednesday.
