PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Cole Hamels has agreed to a three-year, $20.5 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, three people familiar with the negotiations said Saturday.
Hamels and the Phillies avoid a potentially messy arbitration hearing with the deal.
The people spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because an official announcement hasn’t been made. A news conference is planned for Sunday.
Hamels was the MVP of Philadelphia’s World Series victory over Tampa Bay, and the National League championship series. The left-hander went 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts in the postseason as Phillies claimed their first championship since 1980.
Hamels went 14-10 with a 3.09 ERA during the regular season and was eligible for arbitration for the first time.
