Giants Season Odds
The San Francisco Giants are hoping that their farm system will finally start producing quality offensive pieces like the ones it has given them in the pitching staff.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have made the Giants 32/1 long shots to win the 2009 World Series and established their National League Pennant odds at 18/1.
The mostly sat pat this offseason, deciding to give youngsters Pablo Sandoval, Travis Ishikawa and Emmanuel Burriss regular roles instead of adding a top bat. But San Fran did address its bullpen in the offseason, which was a major issue in 2008. The G-Men signed quality veteran relievers in Jeremy Affeldt and Bob Howry.
If you’re looking for a potential deep sleeper in the National League, look no further than the Giants. The starting pitching is solid, with reining NL Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum leading the way and followed by former Cy Young winner Randy Johnson (who was signed as a free agent in the offseason), young flamethrower Matt Cain, another former Cy Young winner in Barry Zito, and emerging youngster Jonathan Sanchez.
The key is whether or not Sandoval, Ishikawa and Burriss can step up in regular roles this season, and if 2008 free agent dud Aaron Rowand can produce more than he did last year. But thanks to guys like Randy Winn, Fred Lewis and Bengie Molina, the Giants should score more runs than they did last year and they could make some noise in the NL, especially considering the NL West Division isn’t a powerhouse.
