(The Spread) – Following his victory in the Kentucky Derby will Orb win horse racing’s Triple Crown this year?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the odds for Orb winning the Triple Crown this year are +250 and the odds against him winning are -400. So clearly oddsmakers don’t think Orb will be the next Triple Crown winner after taking home victory in the Kentucky Derby.
There have only been 11 Triple Crown winners in horse racing history, with the last winner coming in 1978 (Affirmed). The other Triple Crown winners were Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), and Seattle Slew (1977).
Orb has been overly impressive in his recent outings, claiming victory in his last five starts. On top of winning the Kentucky Derby he also won the Grade I Florida Derby on March 30 and the Grade II Fountain of Youth on February 23. The worst he’s raced was back-to-back fourth-place finishes in Maiden Special Weights on September 8 and November 10 of last year.
As of right now, the only contenders scheduled to run in the Preakness Stakes are Oxbow, Will Take Charge, Goldencents and Departing. The Preakness will take place on Saturday, May 18 from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.
