Nogueira enters the fight as a slight favorite with a betting line of -140 with Cane given a money line of +110 according to online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. Here is a closer look at both fighters heading into this main event bout, which will take place from the
Luiz Cane (10-1):
Strengths: Cane has quietly become one of the top fighters in the light heavyweight division that perhaps you have never heard of. Cane has won three straight in the octagon, two of which came by TKO. Cane is a fighter that likes to overwhelm his opponent with pressure and striking. Cane has also exhibited the ability to fight on the ground and defend while on his back.
Weaknesses: While Cane is quickly rising up the ranks, he hasn’t quite fought someone with the experience or submission ability that Nogueira has. Cane will be facing a fighter that can take a lot of punishment, and he will have to exhibit patience and composure in order to win the fight. If Cane can fight off his back and defend submissions, he should be in good shape.
Last Five Fights:
Unanimous decision win over Steve Cantwell at UFC 97 on April 18, 2009
Second round TKO win over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 89 on Oct. 18, 2008
First round TKO win over Jason Lambert at UFC 85 on June 7, 2008
First round DQ loss to James Irvin at UFC 79 on Dec. 29, 2007
First round KO win over James Damien Stelly at AOW-Art of War 3 on Sept. 1, 2007
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (17-3):
Strengths: Nogueira is the brother of UFC heavyweight Antonio Minotauro Nogeuira and has the same submission abilities as his brother, though he prefers to do more striking than his brother. Nogueira is a well-rounded fighter for that reason as he has been able to win many fights by KO or TKO and also by submission. Nogueira also has an ability to take a lot of punishment in a fight without being stopped, much like his brother.
Weaknesses: This will be Nogueira’s first fight inside the Octagon, which is always an issue for first-time UFC fighters. Nogeuira has fought some of the best in the world, including Mauricio Rua, Dan Henderson, and Alistair Overeem, but Nogueira hasn’t fought a high caliber opponent since 2006. With this being the first time he will be tested by a fighter that can match his pacing and striking ability, Nogueira could show some rust.
Last Five Fights:
Third Round submission win over Dion Staring at JF 13 on May 9, 2009
Second round KO win over Vladimir Matyushenko at Affliction 2 on Jan. 24, 2009
Unanimous decision win over Moise Rimbon at Sengoku – Sixth Battle on Nov. 1, 2008
First round TKO win over Edwin Dewees at Affliction 1 on July 19, 2008
Second round TKO win over Todd Gouwenberg at HCF-Destiny on Feb. 1, 2008
Who will win: This fight should be very competitive from the opening bell. Each fighter has ways he can win standing and on the ground. The likelihood is that the winner will be the one that catches the first clean punch on his opponent. I think Nogueira has the experience and the maturity to ride this fight out and simply beat Cane through toughness and veteran experience. Look for Nogeuira to win by decision or a third round submission on a tired Cane.
