Rip Van Winkle Odds
With two wins to its credit in 2009, Rip Van Winkle has emerged as one of the betting favorites for this Saturday’s 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.COM have given Rip Van Winkle 10/3 odds to win this year’s Breeders Cup Classic. The pre-race favorite is Zenyatta (3/1), while Summer Bird (6/1) and Colonel John (10/1) both have short odds to win.
Foaled in 2006 in Ireland, Rip Van Winkle has won two big races in England this year, taking the victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Sussex Stakes.
Rip Van Winkle has battled with another successful European Horse, Sea The Stars, this year, finishing second to it in the Eclipse Stakes and 2,000 Guineas. Those losses came as trainer Aiden O’Brien was working to get the horse in shape after fighting an infection in all four feet. Sea The Stars has since retired and will not run this Saturday after initially appearing on the betting lines.
Rip Van Winkle drew the 10th gate for Saturday’s race and could have tremendous value for his odds. His jockey, Johnny Murtagh, also has two Breeders’ Cup victories on his resume from when he rode 1995 Mile aboard Ridgewood Pearl and the 2000 Turf aboard Kalanisi. So if familiarity breeds success, Rip Van Winkle definitely has a shot to cash in this Saturday. Not to mention, Rip is a European horse and Europeans dominanted the Breeders' Cup last year.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. For more information on this year’s race, check out our 2009 Breeders Cup Viewing Guide.
