Quality Road Odds
An early favorite to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby, injuries have made for an up-and-down year for Quality Road. The three-year-old looks to finish the year on a high note when it competes in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL have given Quality Road 12/1 odds to win. Zenyatta is the pre-race favorite at 3/1 while other short odds are Rip Van Winkle (10/3) and Summer Bird (6/1).
Foaled in March of 2006, Quality Road is sired by Elusive Quality, who also sired Smarty Jones, who won the 2004 Kentucky Debry and Preakness Stakes.
After winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes and Florida Derby early in 2009, Quality Road was thought to be a strong contender for the Kentucky Derby this year. However, injuries two his right feet forced him to miss the entire triple crown.
Since the injuries, Quality Road won the Amsterdam Stakes, a 6.5 furlong race on the dirt track of Saratoga. Quality Road has followed up the win with a third place finish in the Travers Stakes in August and a second place finish in the Jockey Gold Cup, finishing behind Summer Bird in October.
Quality Road will start out of the 12th gate for Saturday’s race. After a hot start to the year winning three of his first four races, Quality Road has cooled off a bit lately. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t offer some value, because he did finish third (Shadwell Travers) and second (Jockey Club Gold Cup) in his last two outings.
Perhaps the best reason to take Quality Road this Saturday is his jockey, John Velazquez. Velazquez owns seven Breeders’ Cup victories, including a double win in 2004 with Ashado in the Distaff and Speighstown in the Sprint. He also scored a double in 2002 with Starine in the Filly & Mare Turf and Storm Flag Flying in the Juvenile Fillies. With so much Breeders' Cup experience, Quality Road and Velazquez might be worth a shot.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. For more information on this year’s race, check out our 2009 Breeders Cup Viewing Guide.
