With its first major victory achieved last month, Girolamo is looking to win another big event on Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com have given Girolamo 18/1 odds to win. Zenyatta is the pre-race favorite at 3/1 while other short odds are Rip Van Winkle (10/3) and Summer Bird (6/1).
Foaled in 2006, Girolamo was sired by Not for Love.A fairly inexperience three-year-old horse, Girolamo is coming off his first stakes victory back on Oct. 11 when he won the Belmont Jerome Handicap, a one-mile race.
Girolamo is three-for-three this year but has just the one major victory to his credit. He will begin Saturday’s race out of the ninth gate and obviously his three-race winning streak breeds a lot of confidence in this thoroughbred entering the Breeders’ Cup. He also should be well rested because he didn’t race earlier in the season.
Girolamo’s jockey, Alan Garcia, won his first Breeders’ Cup race in 2007 on his first mount. He ran Filly & Mare Turf winner Lahudood, whom he also won on his first Grade 1 victory in the 2007 Flower Bowl Invitational.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. For more information on this year’s race, check out our 2009 Breeders Cup Viewing Guide.
