Gio Ponti Odds
A horse that has had plenty of success on grass tracks, Gio Ponti, hopes to find success on the dirt track of Santa Anita Park for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.COM have given Gio Ponti 12/1 odds to win. Zenyatta is the pre-race favorite at 3/1 while other short odds are Rip Van Winkle (10/3) and Summer Bird (6/1).
Gio Ponti foaled in 2005 and was sired by Tale of the Cat and is owned by Castleton Lyons with trainer Christophe Clement.
Gio Ponti has four wins in 2009 alone, but all have come on turf. Seven of his eight wins since 2007 have come on turf, but the lone dirt track win actually came at Santa Anita Park in the 2008 Sir Beaufort Stakes, which was an eight-furlong race, about a quarter-mile shorter than Saturday’s Classic.
Gio Ponti drew the seventh gate for Saturday’s race and could be a solid sleeper bet at 12/1 because of his jockey. Ramon Dominguez led the nation in earnings with $14,123,426 and has had 314 wins over his career. He also holds one Breeders’ Cup victory from 20 mounts, which was in 2004 while riding Better Talk Now.
Considering he will be ridden by an experienced jockey and has won five of his last seven races, Gio Ponti could be an outstanding value at his No. 7 position. Don’t be surprised if he could pull off a small upset at this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. For more information on this year’s race, check out our 2009 Breeders Cup Viewing Guide.
