Fort Larned Breeders' Odds
ARCADIA, CA (The Spread) - Fort Larned won last year's Breeders' Cup Classic but he doesn't have the best odds for this year's field.
According to oddsmakers from online sports books Bovada.lv, Fort Larned is 5/1 to win this year's Breeders' Cup Classic, giving him the third-best odds behind the favorite, Game On Dude (5/2), and Mucho Macho Man at 4/1. Palace Malice is also 9/1, Will Take Charge is 10/1 and Paynter is 12/1.
Fort Larned has been highly inconsistent since winning the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic. He finished sixth at the Grade 2 Gulstream Park Handicap on March 9 of this year and took fifth in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap on April 13. While he did win the Grade 1 Stephen Foster back in June and the Homecoming Classic on September 28th, he finished fifth at the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap.
Fort Larned is one of the true wild cards in this race. He looked like he was going to win the Homecoming Classic Stakes by 10 lengths and then won by just a length and a half. He's a horse that runs well when he gets the lead, but if he doesn't he's often fallen back never to recover. Ian R. Wilkes is Fort Larned's trainer and his owner is Janis R. Whitham.
