According to oddsmakers at GTBets, Williams is the heavy favorite, as she has odds of -175 to win. Other short odds are Victoria Azarenka (+800) and Maria Sharapova (+1000). The U.S. Open takes place from Aug. 31-Sept. 13 from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
Williams is seeking to be the first woman to complete the grand slam in a calendar year since Steffi Graf did in 1988. Williams can also tie Graf’s 22-grand slam championships mark with a win in the U.S. Open. Williams has won the title six times in her career and is the three-time defending champion.
Azarenka is looking to claim her third grand slam event title. She has won the Australian Open two times before, but never the U.S. Open. She reached the finals in 2012 and 2013, but lost to Williams both times.
Sharapova has won five grand slam events in her career, including the U.S. Open back in 2006. She hasn’t reached the finals of the event since then, making six appearances. Her last grand slam event win was the 2014 French Open.
