FedEx Cup Odds

The FedEx Cup playoffs officially start this week with The Barclays and the top 125 golfers on the PGA Tour will compete for the $10 million purse over the four-week span.

Top-ranked golfer, and current points leader, Tiger Woods, is the favorite to win the FedEx Cup in 2009 after becoming the first FedEx Cup champion in 2007.

Woods enters the playoffs as a 2/5 favorite to win according to the online sports book SPORTS Other short odds to win are Phil Mickelson (10/1), Geoff Ogilvy (15/1), and Jim Furyk (20/1).

The FedEx Cup playoffs include The Barclays, The Deutsche Bank Championship, The BMW Championship, and The Tour Championship. The tournament starts with the top 125 golfers and each week, the tournament is reduced down in number. The competitors will go from 125 to 100 to 70 to 30 with each respective tournament until the player with the most points following The Tour Championship wins the FedEx Championship.

Woods is currently first in the standings but was unable to take part in the FedEx Cup playoffs last year because of his knee injury, but in 2007, Woods won the final two events of the playoff to take the title. In 2009, Woods has five victories and 11 top-10 finishes.

Mickelson finished seventh in the FedEx Cup standings in 2008. Mickelson placed in the top 10 in just one of the four events last year. In 2007, Mickelson placed third behind Woods and Steve Stricker, coming in with two top-10 finishes, including a win in the BMW Championship. Mickelson has six top 10’s in 2009. Mickelson sit sixth in the current standings.

Ogilvy is eighth in the current standings and has four top 10’s in 2009 with two wins. Furyk is 16th in the current standings and has seven top 10’s in 2009. Last year, Furyk finished no worse than 12th in each of the four playoff events.
