Kaymer defeated Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff to earn the title. The playoff was expected to be between three players as Dustin Johnson appeared to finish the tournament at 11-under par with the two others, but Johnson was given a two-shot penalty for grounding his club in a makeshift bunker on the 72nd hole.

Watson birdied the first hole of the playoff to take a one-shot edge, but Kaymer beat Watson by a shot on the final two holes to win the playoff and earn his first ever major championship.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com, Kaymer had 50/1 odds to win the event, meaning a $100 bet on Mahan will pay out $5,000.

Nick Watney led the field by three shots entering the final round, but he shot an 81 on Sunday to finish the tournament at -4, which put him in 17th place.

Kaymer shot a 70 on Sunday while Watson shot a 68. Johnson shot a 73 with the penalty to finish tied for fifth at -9. Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy finished tied for third at -10 for the tournament.

Retief Goosen and Bo Van Pelt finished tied for third at -9 for the tournament.
