Greenbrier Classic Picks
The Greenbrier Classic replaces the Buick Open on the PGA Tour this year and kicks off today. Our group of writers handicappers hand out their free picks for this weekend’s golf action.
Matt Kuchar (18/1)
Considering Jim Furyk is the favorite and is the only player in the field with a world rank in the top 10, one would think that we would go with him as one of our top-3 picks this weekend. However, after he missed the cut a couple of weeks ago at the British Open, we think he may be tiring out. At 18/1, we think Kuchar represents better value than Furyk (who is 14/1). As of now, he’s on the U.S. Ryder Cup team and a strong finish will help him cement his status on that roster. He has cracked the top 10 in four of his last five PGA Tour starts and is seventh in scoring average. We think he could emerge victorious this weekend.
Jeff Overton (28/1)
Overton has been solid this entire season and deserves more attention for his play. Since April, he has four top-3 finishes, including a 12th-place showing at the Memorial Inn and an 11th-place finish at the British Open. He’s also 10th in Ryder points and is making a strong push as the season heads to the playoffs. He has yet to win, but that could change this weekend.
Charley Hoffman (33/1)
Call this our sleeper pick, even though he has somewhat similar odds to Overton. Hoffman shot a 65 on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open at St. George’s, which put him tied for fourth. That’s his best finish of the season and he hasn’t missed a cut since the Byron Nelson. He also has two top-10 finishes in his last two starts and needs a strong performance if he wants to go deep in the playoffs.
