Of the 10 sports, Italy has the best odds to claim gold medals, as the country is favored in four of the 10 fencing events. Most of the events appear to be highly competitive, with the odds all being relatively close. In history, Italy has done the best in fencing, winning a total of 45 gold medals in Olympic history, which is the most of any country.
The United States is favored in one event of this group. That is the Women’s Sabre where Mariel Zagunis is favored with odds of +150 to win. Zagunis won the Olympic gold medal in 2004 and 2008. She also won the 2009 and 2010 World Championship, but finished second in the 2011 event.
