British Open Round 3

The second round of the 2009 British Open from Turnberry golf course has been completed and the story from Scotland is not who’s atop the leader board, but who flat out missed the cut.

The shocker of the day comes courtesy of Tiger Woods, who for just the second time in his professional career missed the cut at a major after once again struggling at Turnberry. He was a 9/4 favorite entering play this year before dropping to a 5/1 favorite after Round 1.

Woods, who also missed the cut at the 2006 U.S. Open following the death of his father, shot a 74 in Round 2 of the British Open, one day after shooting a 71. His score of 145 gave him a five-over-par, which subsequently also gave him the rest of the weekend off.

Besides Tiger, the big news surrounding this year’s British Open is the play of American’s Tom Watson and Steve Marino. Watson, who was a 100/1 long shot entering play on Friday, shot a 70 to finish five-under-par after two rounds of play. Marino bettered that number with a 68, one day after shooting a 67.

Both Watson and Marino sit at 135 and have a one-stroke advantage over Mark Calcavecchia, who shot a 69 on Friday, as ell as Vijay Singh, Ross Fisher, Retief Gossen, Miguel Jimenez and Kenichi Kuboya, all of which wrapped up Round 2’s action with a total score of 137.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL have made Goosen and Lee Westwood 8/1 favorites heading into the final two rounds of play. Fisher is 9/1, Sergio Garcia is 10/1 and Singh is 12/1.

Despite being in the lead after two rounds, Watson is still a relative long shot at 33/1 to win and Marino has fairly long odds at 16/1. Jimenez is 22/1, Calcavecchia is 33/1 and Sergio Garica (one of the golfers with short odds to open up play) is 16/1.

Play continues at Turnberry Ailsa golf course on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. ET. For complete revised odds on the 2009 British Open, see below.
