Rory McIlroy fired a 9-under 63 in the first round on Thursday and has a two-shot lead on the field, making the 21-year-old the new favorite to win the British Open title.

McIlroy is a 3/1 favorite to win according to oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. Other short odds to win are Tiger Woods (7/2) and Lee Westwood (8/1). Four other golfers are listed at 28/1

McIlroy had the benefit of playing early in the day Thursday, where there was little wind to contend with, which made for low scores. McIlroy had a stretch of four holes where he went 5-under par and he went without a bogey in the entire round.

Woods shot a 5-under 67 on Thursday and he is currently tied for eighth with eight other golfers, including Westwood. Woods missed a pair of short puts on the final two holes to push him back a little. His lone bogey came on the 17th hole.

Westwood also shot a 67 on Thursday as he is seeking his first major championship. Westwood had five-straight birdies at one point in his round to finish the front nine, but an uneventful back nine kept him from getting any further up the leader board.

Louis Oosthuizen sits second for the tournament at -7 after shooting a 65 on Sunday. He is among the group with 28/1 odds to win.

The 2010 British Open Championship (also referred to as The Open Championship or simply, The Open) continues on Friday, July 16 and runs through July 18. The event is played at the Old Course at St. Andrews in the United Kingdom and it’s a par 72. The official yardage for the 2010 event is 7,279 yards and the format is a stroke play.
