Strong first half sends Belgium on
Despite being big underdogs in the quarterfinals against Brazil, Belgium showed no fear and took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on an own goal charged to Fernandinho. Kevin De Bruyne tacked on a cracking goal in the 31st minute to up the advantage to 2-1. From there, Belgium withstood a fierce rally attempt by Brazil as it cut the deficit in half in the 76th minute on a tally from Renato Augosto. Belgium held only 43 percent of the possession, while recording eight shots (three on goal). Brazil accounted for 26 shots (nine on goal). Belgium was called for 16 fouls including two yellow cards, while manufacturing four corner kicks.
France secures third clean sheet of World Cup
With a 2-0 victory over Uruguay in the quarterfinals, France advanced to the World Cup semifinals. The French grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Raphael Varane, while Antoine Griezmann made it a 2-0 game in the 61st minute with an insurance score. France had 57 percent of the possession, recording 11 shots including two on goal. France was called for 15 fouls (two yellow cards). Additionally, the winning side registered three corner kicks.
Prediction:
As good as France has been defensively, Belgium will provide the stiffest attack yet. France could very well be the favorites to win the World Cup in four years, but right now I feel like the underdogs in this match are the more ready squad to hoist the trophy right now. If Belgium can record a win against Brazil, it should have enough to see off France. Take Romelu Lukaku and the Belgians in this spot.
