Australia secures draw vs. Denmark
With a win against Peru today coupled with a Denmark loss by two or more goals to France, Australia would advance to the round of 16. The Aussies are coming off a 1-1 draw last Thursday against Denmark. After a sixth-minute goal put Australia down 1-0, it tied it up at 1-1 in the 38th minute on a penalty kick goal courtesy of Mile Jedinak. Australia held 52 percent of the possession, while firing off 14 shots (five on goal) Denmark had 10 shots (five on goal). There were not many fouls in the contest as Australia was called for seven and no yellow cards. Denmark was called for only five fouls, but two were yellow cards.
Peru loses second straight
About all Peru can do today against Australia is maybe play spoiler, if Denmark loses by two or more goals and Peru beats Australia. The Peruvians already have two losses and know they are going home after this match. Peru lost 1-0 on Thursday to group leader France to ensure its exit. The lone goal was scored in the 34th minute. Peru had 56 percent of the possession, but was outshot 12-10 and conceded five corners while only having three corner kicks of its own. Peru was called for 14 penalties including two yellow cards.
Prediction:
I’m surprised slightly that the line isn’t a bit closer here considering Peru could easily phone it in after losing its first two games, while Australiia knows it must bring the ‘A’ game. But Peru does have more talent on its side, so I think this all evens out into a draw. Bettors might also want to consider the under 2.5, but I’m going to cross my fingers on this one ending 0-0 or 1-1.
