Woods vs. Mickelson

There aren’t two golfers who will have more eyes on them in the 2010 U.S. Open than Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Despite Woods being favored to win the tournament, oddsmakers have listed Mickelson as the favorite to win the head-to-head matchup.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, Mickelson has a money line of -170 while Woods has a line of +130. Here is a look at both golfers heading into this tournament, which takes place from Pebble Beach in Pebble Beach, California and begins on Thursday.

Phil Mickelson -170:
Mickelson has never won this event but he has finished second five different times, including the 2009 tournament. In 2000, when the Open was last played at Pebble Beach, Mickelson finished 16th. Mickelson has four major titles to his credit including the 2010 Masters. That win was one of three top 5’s in his last five tournaments for Lefty. Heading into the U.S. Open, Mickelson has a chance to take the No. 1 world ranking from Woods with a solid finish.

Tiger Woods +130:
Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion, who last won the title in 2008. Woods also holds the record for the largest margin of victory in a U.S. Open, as he took the 2000 title by 15 strokes. That win took place at Pebble Beach, which is where this tournament is. Woods would probably be an overwhelming favorite in this matchup if it wasn’t for his recent struggles. Since finishing fourth in the Masters, Woods missed a cut in the Quail Hollow Championship and then withdrew in the Players Championship because of an injury. In his most recent outing, Woods finished 19th at the Memorial Tournament.

Who will win: This is a tough call as you can’t be certain what Woods will show up for this tournament. Woods does have a lot of success at Pebble Beach and he has the mental toughness to win in a low-scoring tournament. Mickelson has always wanted the U.S. Open title and never been able to get it. We still have a hard time betting against Woods and with him getting solid betting lines now that he has struggled, it could make for a nice payday if he is on his game.
