Nehro vs. Shackleford Matchup Odds
(The Spread) – Oddsmakers have released race matchup odds for the 2011 Belmont Stakes, including those for Nehro and Shackleford.
Nehro turned heads at the 2011 Kentucky Derby when he finished second at Churchill Downs in early May. He also took second place at the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and second at the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby on March 26.
Shackleford was the horse that ruined Animal Kingdom’s bid when he edged the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner out at the Preakness. Shackleford also set the pace at the Kentucky Derby before losing ground down the stretch and finishing fourth.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog current list Nehro as a –170 money line favorite over Shackleford, who is +140 on the ML for this evening’s Belmont Stakes. Note that these odds only concern the race matchup between Nehro and Shackleford, and not the money line odds to win that are listed below.
Race Matchup Breakdown: At this point it’s probably crazy to doubt Shackleford again, but I like Nehro in this matchup. After setting the pace at the Kentucky Derby and then winning the Preakness, Shackleford has to be tired. Nehro is fresh and quite frankly, I think he’s the better horse. I think Shackleford will get out front again early, but on this 1.5-mile track, he’ll tire down the stretch and fade.
