Belmont Stakes Predictions
(The Spread) – The final leg of the Triple Crown is this evening – check out our picks and predictions for the 2011 Belmont Stakes.
Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog currently list Animal Kingdom as a 2/1 favorite to win Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. Nehro is 4/1, Shackleford is 9/2 and Master of Hounds and Mucho Macho Man are 10/1, respectively. Below are our picks for win, place and show.
WIN: Nehro (4/1)
Nehro is the freshest of the three favorites after not racing in the Preakness and he’s due to get that elusive second win of his career. While Animal Kingdom will be tough to take down, I think he and Shackleford will be working with tired legs and it’ll open the door for Nehro – the Kentucky Derby’s runner up – to take home this year’s Belmont Stakes crown.
Place: Mucho Macho Man (10/1)
After winning the Grade 1 Risen Star and placing third in back-to-back outings at the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby and the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man was a major disappointment at the 2011 Preakness Stakes. He finished sixth behind Shackleford, Animal Kingdom and Astrology (among others), but that had a lot to do with the fact that he lost a shoe mid-race. Now that he’s fitted with a new shoe, Mucho Macho Man should be ready to roll at Belmont Park today. In 10 career races, he has only finished outside the money twice (Kentucky Derby and the Grade 3 Holy Bull, where he finished fourth).
Show: Prime Cut (15/1)
Considering Prime Cut as my sleeper of the 2011 Belmont Stakes. I had some luck with my sleeper in the Preakness, as I nailed Astrology to show, so maybe lightning will strike twice and Prime Cut will show up in the money tonight. In seven career races, Prime Cut has finished off the board only once, which came in his debut at a MSW back in June of last year. He won an allowance on March 26, placed second at the Grade 3 Coolmore Lexington Stakes and third at the Grade 2 Peter Pan. Considering it may be a sloppy track, don’t count Prime Cut out for pulling off a major upset this evening.
