(The Spread) – One of the most intriguing matchups in tonight’s Belmont Stakes will be Animal Kingdom versus Shackleford.

After winning the 2011 Kentucky Derby, Animal Kingdom had his bid to win the Triple Crown ruined when Shackleford edged him out down the stretch at the Preakness Stakes. It was a thrilling finish, one that saw Animal Kingdom work his way through the crowd and up to the front but in the end he had too much ground to make up.

Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog have released matchup odds and have pitted Animal Kingdom versus Shackleford. Despite losing to his rival at the Preakness, Animal Kingdom is a –230 money line favorite to finish higher than Shackleford, who is +190 on the ML to finish higher than Animal Kingdom.

Make note that these odds only pertain to the matchup between Animal Kingdom and Shackleford. These odds have nothing to do with the regular Belmont Stakes lines to win, which are listed below. (Animal Kingdom is 2/1 to win the race outright, while Shackleford is 9/2 to win.)

Race Matchup Outlook: I like Animal Kingdom in this matchup. I think Shackleford might set the pace again but over a 1.5-mile track, I think he’ll tire. He’s not fresh and the Kentucky Derby and Preakness had to have taken a lot out of him. Granted, Animal Kingdom also raced in those legs of the Triple Crown, but I honestly think he’s the better horse. Minus 230 on the money line is a steep price but nevertheless I like Animal Kingdom in this matchup.
