Shackleford Belmont Odds
(The Spread) – 2011 Preakness winner Shackleford can make it two in a row with a victory this Saturday at the Belmont Stakes.
Odds: Shackleford opened with 4/1 odds and is now 5/1 according to online sports book Bodog. That puts him in the same company as other favorites Animal Kingdom (5/2), Nehro (5/1) and Master of Hounds (6/1).
Race History: As previously mentioned, Shackleford took home first place in the 2011 Preakness, beating out Animal Kingdom and ruining his bid for a Triple Crown. Shackleford also finished fourth at the Kentucky Derby, second at the Grade 1 Florida Derby and fifth at the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth.
Outlook: The wild Shackleford might be out of gas come Saturday, but there’s no doubt he’s a value at 5/1. He actually set the pace at the Kentucky Derby before falling just out of the money and then raced out in front at the Preakness before holding Animal Kingdom off for the win. Now the question becomes: Can he race on a mile and a half track? Furthermore, does he have the energy to hold off runners behind him when the contenders enter Belmont’s stretch run? We’ll find out soon enough.
