Dullahan Still Favored at Belmont
ELMONT, NY (The Spread) – With I’ll Have Another scratched from today’s race, Dullahan remains the favorite to win the 2012 Belmont Stakes.
Oddsmakers have installed Dullahan as a 9/5 favorite entering today’s third leg of the Triple Crown. Union Rags has the next best odds at 11/5 while Paynter is 9/2 and Street Life is 17/2. Optimizer is 161, My Adonis is 20/1 and Unstoppable U is 21/1.
Continuing with the updated odds, Atigun is 24/1, Ravelo’s Boy is 40/1 and Five Sixteen is 50/1. Guyana Star Dweej remains the biggest long shot at 60/1, which isn’t surprising considering he has yet to race against graded stakes throughout his career.
Dullahan finished third in the Kentucky Derby behind I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister. Union Rags finished seventh but he was one of the early favorites to win the Derby, so it makes sense that he has the next best odds behind Dullahan. In four career races Paynter has two victories and one second-place finish at the Grade III Derby Trial on April 28.
I’ll Have Another was attempting to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed achieved the feat in 1978. Had he won the Belmont, I’ll Have Another would have become just the 12th Triple Crown winner in horse racing history. But a leg injury will effectively end his career as he becomes the first horse not to run in the Belmont Stakes with a Triple Crown on the line.Want More From TheSpread.com?
