Santiva Belmont Odds
(The Spread) – After a disappointing finish at the Kentucky Derby, Santiva will look to have a better showing in the 2011 Belmont Stakes this week.
Odds: Santiva opened as a 25/1 long shot to win the Belmont Stakes but according to oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog, the 3-year-old colt’s odds have dropped. Now Santiva is 16/1 to win, placing him in the same company as fellow mid-range long shots Brilliant Speed (16/1) and prime Cut (18/1).
Race History: Santiva finished sixth at the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, which was a disappointment but he did improve on his ninth place finish at the Grade 1 Blue Grass on April 16. He also finished second at the Grade 2 Risen Star on February 19 (losing out to Mucho Macho Man) and he won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club back in November of last year.
Outlook: One of the attractive factors about Santiva is that he has a ton of race experience against graded competition. And while he has failed to finish in the money in consecutive races, he has finished on the board in three of his five graded stakes outings. Still, the fact that he finished sixth behind (among others) Animal Kingdom, Nehro and Mucho Macho Man – three contenders he’ll be facing this Saturday – it’s hard to say whether or not he’s worth a look for the Belmont. Then again, maybe he’s peaking and he’s about to embark on big things this weekend.
