Odds: When the opening odds were released for the 2011 Belmont Stakes, Brilliant Speed wasn’t listed. But according to oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog, Brilliant Speed is now 16/1 to win this Saturday’s race. Those odds put him in the same company as Santiva (16/1) and Prime Cut (18/1).
Race History: Brilliant Speed finished seventh at the Kentucky Derby, which was disappointing considering he won the Grade 1 Blue Grass on April 16 – his last outing before racing at Churchill Downs. He also finished third at the Hallandale Beach on February 6 and second at the Dania Beach on January 16.
Outlook: While his showing at Churchill Downs was disappointing, Brilliant Speed has finished in the money three out of the four times this year. He has also won a Grade 1 race, proving that he can race against top competition. Does that make him a value at this weekend’s Belmont? Maybe, although I don’t know if he can run the distance and beat out favorites like Animal Kingdom and Nehro. Still, his recent race history shows some promise.
