Dullahan now favored to win Belmont
ELMONT, NY (The Spread) – With Triple Crown contender I’ll Have Another scratched from Saturday’s race, Dullahan is now the new favorite to win the 2012 Belmont Stakes.
Oddsmakers had to scramble on Friday morning to adjust the odds for Saturday’s race after trainer Doug O’Neill announced that I’ll Have Another has been scratched from the Belmont. The horse apparently came down with an unspecified injury in a situation that can only be described as disappointing and mysterious.
Dullahan is the new favorite at 5/2 while Union Rags is 3/1. Dullahan skipped the Preakness Stakes a few weeks ago but finished a respectable third at this year’s Kentucky Derby behind I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister. Union Rags, meanwhile, was one of the early favorites to win the Kentucky Derby but he finished a disappointing seventh and sat out of the Preakness.
Paynter now has the third-best odds to win the Belmont at 5/1 while Street Life is 8/1. Both My Adonis and Optimizer are 15/1, respectively, and Atigun is 20/1. Unstoppable U is also 20/1 while Five Sixteen, Guyana Star Dweej and Ravelo’s Boy are all 40/1 long shots.
I’ll Have Another was attempting to become the 12th Triple Crown winner after he became the 33rd horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. But after O’Neill dropped the breaking news bomb on the horse-racing world on Friday, the intriguing has been completely sucked out of the Belmont Stakes. Without a Triple Crown contender, there figures to be a lot less people set to tune in on Saturday evening.Want More From TheSpread.com?
