I'll Have Another Scratched at Belmont
ELMONT, NY (The Spread) – It looks like horse racing won’t see another contender attempt the Triple Crown after all.
In what can only be described as highly disappointing news for the horse racing world, 2012 Triple Crown contender I’ll Have Another has been scratched from the Belmont Stakes this weekend. While appearing on “The Dan Patrick Show” Friday, I’ll Have Another’s trainer Doug O’Neill says the horse has an unspecified injury and cannot run.
O’Neill even went on to speculate that I’ll Have Another has run in his last ever race. He becomes the first horse since 1936 to miss the Belmont due to injury with the Triple Crown on the line. What’s odd is that just O’Neill had just deemed I’ll Have Another as “fit and ready to go” after one final gallop in secrecy at Belmont Park.
As of this writing oddsmakers have yet to release updated odds for the Belmont, although Dullahan is the obvious choice to be made favorite. He had the next best odds behind I’ll Have Another at 4/1 as late as Thursday night, while Union Rags was 5/1. Dullahan finished third at this year’s Kentucky Derby and Union Rags was one of the early favorites to win the Derby before finishing a disappointing seventh.
I’ll Have Another was looking to become the 12th Triple Crown winner after he became the 33rd horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. With him now out of the race, the Belmont figures to take a huge hit in TV ratings as all of the luster and intrigue has been sucked out of Elmont, New York.Want More From TheSpread.com?
