Monzon 2011 Belmont Odds
(The Spread) – After skipping the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, contender Monzon has been listed as a long shot to win the 2011 Belmont.
Odds: Monzon wasn’t listed when the opening odds were released a couple of days after the Preakness Stakes. But according to online sports book Bodog, he is now a 35/1 long shot, which puts him in the same company as Harlan’s Hello (35/1) and Isn’t He Perfect (45/1).
Race History: Monzon is coming off a sixth place finish at the Grade 2 Peter Pan on May 14. He did win in his first outing of the year on January 1 at the Count Fleet, but struggled in his next start when he finished fith at the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis on February 12. Last year, he placed fifth at the Grade 3 Bourbon and third at Gnome’s Gold.
Outlook: The 3-year-old gelding only has two career wins under his belt and neither came in a graded stakes. In fact, he hasn’t finished in the money once in his career, so it’s no surprise that oddsmakers have listed him as one of the long shots. Unknown contenders can emerge as sleepers, but there’s nothing in Monzon’s race history to suggest that he could surprise this Saturday in the 2011 Belmont.
