2012 Belmont Stakes Post Positions
ELMONT, NY (The Spread) – The post positions for the 2012 Belmont Stakes have been drawn and Triple Crown contender I’ll Have Another isn’t anywhere close to the rail.
I’ll Have Another will try to become the 12th Triple Crown winner on Saturday after he became the 33rd horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. But he’ll have to come from the outside if he’s going to win this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes after he drew the No. 11 post position on Wednesday.
Street Life drew the rail position followed by Unstoppable U and Union Rags. Atigun will emerge from the No. 4 post while Dullahan will come out of the No. 5 position. Ravelo’s Boy will be No. 6, Five Sixteen will be No. 7 and Guyana Star Dweej will be No. 8. Paynter will come out of the No. 9 post position, Optimizer will come out of the No. 10 and My Adonis drew No. 12.
I’ll Have Another continues to be a heavy favorite according to oddsmakers. He has odds of 11/10 to win the Belmont Stakes while Dullahan is 15/4 and Union Rags is 21/4. Paynter is 9/1 to win this weekend while Street Life is 14/1 and My Adonis is 25/1. Optimizer, who along with I’ll Have Another is the only contender to race in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, is also 25/1.
Ruler on Ice stunned the field last year by winning as a 24/1 long shot and he emerged from the No. 3 post. If you’re wondering what the No. 11 post position did last year since it compares to I’ll Have Another, contender Isn’t He Perfect finished dead last out of that gate in 2011. But he was also a 28/1 long shot so take that information for what it’s worth. The last time a No. 11 post finished in the money was 2010 when First Dude placed third behind Drosselymeyer and Fly Down.
