Samraat Belmont Preview
ELMONT, NEW YORK (The Spread) - After a late fade in the Kentucky Derby, Samraat will look for a better showing this Saturday in the Belmont Stakes.
Samraat was running in the money early in the Kentucky Derby but faded down the stretch, finishing third behind California Chrome, Commanding Curve and Danza, among others. It was the first time in Samraat he finished outside of the money in seven career starts. He did not run in the Preakness Stakes three weeks ago.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Samraat is a 28/1 long shot to win the Belmont on Saturday. California Chrome, who is looking to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978, is the favorite at 10/11 while Tonalist and Wicked Strong are both 7/1 to win. Among the other challenges include Commanding Curve at 9/1 odds and Ride On Curlin at 13/2.
Samraat has five career victories which include the Grade III Withers on February 1 and the Grade III Gotham on March 1. After a second-place showing in the Grade I Wood Memorial behind Wicked Strong, some believed that Samraat was a sleeper to at least finish in the money at the Derby. Alas, after running near the front early on, the upset wasn't meant to be.
Nothing in Samraat's pedigree, which includes Noble Causeway, suggests that he'll pull off the upset this weekend. Noble Causeway finished 14th in the 2005 Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Preakness Stakes that same year.
The 2014 Belmont Stakes takes place on Saturday, June 7 at 6:30PM ET.
