Five Sixteen Belmont Preview
ELMONT, NY (The Spread) – After failing to run against elite competition all year, 2012 Belmont Stakes contender Five Sixteen is viewed as a massive long shot to win the third leg of the Triple Crown this weekend.
Oddsmakers currently list Five Sixteen as a 50/1 long shot, which makes him, Guyana Star Dweej and Ravelo’s Boy the long shots to win this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. I’ll Have Another is the current favorite at 3/2, while Dullahan is 7/2 and Union Rags is 4/1.
Five Sixteen has yet to race against graded competition all year. He placed third at a Maiden on February 11 and fourth at an Allowance on April 18. He did win a Maiden race on March 14, but he’s likely to struggle against top competition like I’ll Have Another, Dullahan and Union Rags, who have proven they can compete against the best.
Machmer Hall is Five Sixteen’s breeder while Dominick A. Schettino is his trainer. He enters the 2012 Belmont Stakes with a career record of 6-1-1-1, with his lone victory coming in the previously mentioned Maiden on March 14. Five Sixteen has posted a Best Beyer of 78.
This will be the 144th running of the Belmont Stakes, with the post time scheduled for 6:35PM ET. I’ll Have Another will attempt to become the 12th Triple Crown winner after he was the 33rd horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
