Dixon has not had a great start to his 2012 season. He is sixth in the current IRL standings and has finished outside the top 15 in his last two races. He began the season with a pair of runner-up finishes, but is still seeking his first win of the season.
According to oddsmakers, Dixon has 5/1 odds of winning this year’s Indianapolis 500. He did not qualify well and will begin 15th in Sunday’s race. It is his worst starting position in nine Indy 500s. Dixon won the 2008 title after claiming the pole. He has finished in the top 5 four times in the Indy 500 and has only placed outside the top 10 two times in his eight career races at this track.
In the history of the Indy 500, only three drivers have claimed the title when starting from the 15th position. The last winner came back in 1966. When it comes to starting in the fifth row, only eight champions have ever started that far back, with the last winner coming in 2002.
The Indianapolis 500 will take place Sunday, May 27 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway at Noon ET.
