When oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com released the opening odds for the 2011 Preakness Stakes, Animal Kingdom was listed at 4/1. But since then, his odds have dropped to 2/1 and have essentially stayed unchanged.
Animal Kingdom only has five career races under his belt, but in those five outings he has never finished off the board. In fact, he hasn’t finished lower than second. He’s won his last two races, which include the Kentucky Derby on May 7 and the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway on March 26. (His other victory came at Keenland in October.)
Once again Animal Kingdom will be ridden by John Velazquez, who wasn’t even supposed to ride Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby. He was supposed to mount Uncle Mo, but the colt was scratched a day before the race and the rest was history. The duo will come out of the No. 11 post position tonight at the Preakness.
