2018 Preakness Stakes Predictions
Will Justify win the second jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown? Who will challenge him? What are the best bets for win, place and show on Saturday night at Pimlico Race Course? Here are our predictions for the 2018 Preakness Stakes.
According to oddsmakers, Justify is the hands-down favorite to win Saturday night at 4/13 odds. The contender with the next-best odds is Good Magic, who is 7/2, followed by Bravazo at 8/1.
Quip, meanwhile, is 12/1, followed by Lone Sailor at 15/1. The long shots include Sporting Chance at 25/1, plus Diamond King and Tenfold, who are 30/1, respectively.
To Win: Justify
I didn't go chalk at the Kentucky Derby and it cost me dearly. (For the record, I had Magnum Moon, who was squeezed and then kicked at the start while winding up 19th out of 20th qualifiers.) Even though Good Magic had a great run at the Kentucky Derby, he tired down the stretch while Justify pulled away for an easy victory. I don't see anyone in this field that is in Justify's class and I could envision him winning wire-to-wire.
To Place: Quip
This is one of the more talented horses in this year's field and if Justify doesn't win wire-to-wire, I could see Quip setting the pace early. He has the rail in a small field so we don't have to worry about him being squeezed and kicked. Quip is also fresh after skipping the Kentucky Derby. He has run very well in both starts this year, winning the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby and running second to the aforementioned Magnum Moon in the Arkansas Derby. I'm taking a shot that Quip has the best chance among the early leaders not named Justify to remain in contention throughout.
To Show: Diamond King
Since we receive zero value from Justify, I'm going to back him with a couple of long shots to see if we can't cash in on a decent tri-fecta payout. Diamond King has the tactical speed to challenge, he just has a reputation of maxing out at seven furlongs or a mile. But if I like Quip's speed and believe fatigue will be an issue for Good Magic, why not take Justify and a pair of well-rested horses?
