Bodemeister vs. Went The Day Well
BALTIMORE, MD (The Spread) – Which contender will finish today’s Preakness Stakes higher: Bodemeister or Went The Day Well?
The odds currently favor Bodemeister at –200, which isn’t surprising seeing as how he’s a 3/2 favorite to win the entire race. But there is some value in Went The Day Well at +160 on the money line.
The reason for it is because Went The Day Well finished fourth at the 2012 Kentucky Derby two weeks ago and has a winning trainer-jockey combination. Graham Motion and John Velazquez won the 2011 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs with 20/1 odds so they’re used to winning as long shots.
That said, there’s a reason why Bodemeister is favored to beat the field at this year’s Preakness. Not only did he nearly win the Kentucky Derby this year, but he also finished first at the Grade I Arkansas Derby on April 14 and placed second at the Grade II San Felipe Stakes on March 10. He has never finished lower than second throughout his entire five-race career.
The specific odds relating to Bodemeister and Went The Day Well are for head-to-head matchup purposes only. Thus, it doesn’t matter if the horse doesn’t win the race, he just has to beat out his head-to-head partner by finishing higher.
