2011 Preakness Post Positions
(The Spread) – The post positions were announced Wednesday for the 2011 Preakness Stakes and Animal Kingdom will start in post No. 11.
Animal Kingdom, who surprised many horseracing observers by winning the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, will once again start away from the rail. He ran out of the No. 16 post position at the Kentucky Derby, so obviously he’s already had some success coming from out wide.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have updated their odds and Animal Kingdom is +200 on the money line, making him the favorite to win this year’s Preakness. There was no change in Animal Kingdom’s odds from the start of the week (he was +200 on Monday, too), but he was +400 when the opening lines were released a day after the Kentucky Derby.
Dialed In, who was favored to win the Kentucky Derby and is +400 on the money line to win the Preakness, will start from the No. 10 post position. Many observers expect him to run much better this weekend after he finished a disappointing 8th at Churchill Downs two weeks ago. He came out of the gates slow and while he did show a good drive down the stretch, it was too little too late.
Mucho Macho Man, who finished third at the Kentucky Derby and who is +600 on the money line to win this weekend, will start out of the No. 9 post position. Many are expected him to challenge Animal Kingdom at Pimlico Race Course, just as he did at Churchill Downs two weeks ago.
The rest of the post positions for the 2011 Preakness are as follows: No. 1 Astrology; No. 2 Norman Asbjornson; No. 3 King Congie; No. 4 Flashpoint; No. 5 Shackelford; No. 6 Sway Away; No. 7 Midnight Interlude; No. 8 Dance City; No. 9 Mucho Macho Man; No. 10 Dialed In; No. 11 Animal Kingdom; No. 12 Isn’t He Perfect; No. 13 Concealed Identity; No. 14 Mr. Commons.
Lookin At Lucky won the 2010 Preakness from the No. 7 gate, while First Dude finished second out of the No. 11 post and Jackson Bend finished third out of the N0. 6 position. In 2009, Rachel Alexandra won out of the No. 13 gate, while Mine That Bird finished second out of the No. 2 post and Musket Man finished third out of the No. 3 position.
