(The Spread) – We continue our preview of the 2011 Preakness with a look today at one of the long shots in Midnight Interlude.

Odds: When oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog.com released the opening odds for the 2011 Preakness, Midnight Interlude’s lines weren’t even available. The reason for that is unknown, although it doesn’t matter: his odds are available now and he’s +2000 on the money line. Those odds place him with fellow long shots Concealed Identity, who is +2500 on the money line, as well as King Congie and Mr. Commons, who are both +2000.
Race History: Midnight Interlude is coming off a disappointing run at the Kentucky Derby in which he finished 16th behind Animal Kingdom, Nehro, Mucho Macho Man and damn near the entire field. He did win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 9, making believers out of some bettors. But his flop at Churchill Downs makes observers question whether or not he can run with the big boys. Maybe he just had an off day; he’ll have another chance to prove himself this Saturday at the Preakness.
Outlook: After winning the Santa Anita, Midnight Interlude had made a believer out of public bettors. He was bet on the fifth most in a 19-horse field at the Kentucky Derby, but after running with good energy early on he tired late and faded. There probably won’t be the same amount of trust in Midnight Interlude this weekend among public bettors, but maybe he’ll surprise by saving his energy for the stretch run and surprising as one of the long shots.
