Preakness Official Results & Payouts
BALTIMORE, MD (The Spread) - California Chrome inched closer to becoming the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 after winning the 2014 Preakness Stakes.
California Chrome came into today's race favored to win the Preakness and after receiving a late challenge from Ride On Curlin, the Kentucky Derby winner emerged victorious once again. Horse racing hasn't seen a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978 but California Chrome will have a shot to end the long streak when he competes in the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.
Ride On Curlin's late charge produced a second-place finish while Social Inclusion finished third. Ride On Curlin entered the day at 14/1 to win, although his odds dropped down to 10/1 before the race. Social Inclusion had the next-best odds to win behind California Chrome, so it's no surprise that he finished in the money. Social Inclusion was 13/2 to win the Preakness at the start of the day.
The payout on California Chrome was $3.00 to win, $3.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Ride On Curlin, meanwhile, produced $5.60 to place and $3.80 to show, while Social Inclusion cashed in $3.40 to show. A $2.00 EXACTA of 3-10 netted winners $18.20 while a $1.00 TRIFECTA of 3-10-8 produced $38.00 to winners and a $1.00 SUPERFECTA of 3-10-8-2 cashed in a prize of $173.80.
At the start of the day, California Chrome had 2/1 odds to win this year's Triple Crown according to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv. He also had odds of 1/3 NOT to win horse racing's most prestigious honor. Those odds will certainly change after California Chrome's victory at Pimlico today.
