Odds: When oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com released the opening odds for the 2011 Preakness, Mr. Commons was listed at +1000 on the money line. Now he finds himself as one of the long shots (along with Midnight Interlude, King Congie and Concealed Identity) at +2000 to win.
Race History: Mr. Commons only has four career races under his belt (three as a 3-year-old), but he’s finished in the money in his last three outings. After finishing sixth as a 2-year-old at a MSW in December last year, Mr. Commons won a MSW on January 15 and then won again at an Allowance on February 26. In his biggest outing to date, he placed third at the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby behind Midnight Interlude and Comma to the Top on April 9.
Outlook: What’s unique about Mr. Commons is that he’s already raced on three surfaces, including in his debut when he ran sixth out of seventh on the synthetic track at Hollywood Park last December. He also raced on the Santa Anita turf and on his first try on dirt, he came from off the pace to win by a head in a one-mile entry-level Allowance at Santa Anita. He has more than doubled his $70,000 purchase price as a yearling and may be an attractive buy come Saturday.
