Odds: When oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog.com released the opening odds for this year’s Preakness, King Congie was +1000 on the money line. But his odds have gotten worse over the last two weeks, and now he’s a +2000 money line long shot to emerge victorious at Pimlico Race Course this Saturday.
Race History: King Congie has six races under his belt, but just one outing against graded competition. That came on April 16, which was his last race, when he finished third at the Blue Grass (Grade 1). Before then, he had a three-outing win streak when he won a MSW in November of last year, the Tropical Park Derby on January 1 and the Hallandale Beach on February 6.
Outlook: Although King Congie won the $100,000 Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park on February 6, he was actually disqualified for interference and placed third. A minor setback caused him from running in the Spiral Stakes in March, but he did return to place third in the Blue Grass at Keeneland on April 16, fueling some to believe that he could be a sleeper. If he had more race history against graded competition, oddsmakers would have a better feel where to set King Congie’s odds. But since he’s a bit of a mystery, he remains a long shot and might be a nice buy to finish in the money this weekend.
